Typhoon Halong Aftermath: Rescues in Alaska, East Coast Flooding (2025)

Typhoon's Aftermath: Devastation and Resilience in Alaska and the East Coast

The remnants of Typhoon Halong have left a trail of devastation in western Alaska, with more than 30 people rescued and three still missing. The storm's powerful winds and flooding have swept away homes in coastal communities, leaving residents in dire need of assistance. In the tiny villages of Kipnuk and Kwigillingok, rescue aircraft have been deployed to reach those in need, with reports of homes floating away and people unaccounted for.

The situation is particularly dire in Kwigillingok, where at least 18 people have been rescued and three remain missing. In Kipnuk, 16 people have been rescued, and local officials are working to determine the number of missing residents. The area's isolation, with limited road access and residents relying on boardwalks, boats, and snowmobiles, has made the rescue efforts challenging.

Despite the devastation, Governor Mike Dunleavy has assured that help is on the way, emphasizing the state's commitment to assisting those affected by the storm. Meanwhile, on the East Coast, a nor'easter has brought its own set of challenges, with major coastal flooding expected in the mid-Atlantic region, particularly from Virginia to New Jersey.

The National Weather Service warns of strong onshore winds, high surf, and high tides, with coastal flooding expected to peak on Monday afternoon and gradually improve by Tuesday morning. The storm has already caused significant damage, washing out roads and causing air travel delays. New Jersey, under a state of emergency since Saturday night, has seen wind gusts exceeding 55 mph, and New York has issued emergency declarations for several counties.

In Delaware, the National Guard has been activated to respond to rising floodwaters and harsh winds, and a voluntary evacuation order has been issued for Bowers Beach. The Outer Banks in North Carolina, an area already vulnerable to storm damage, has also been affected, with ocean overwash spreading across Highway 12 near Buxton. The storm's impact continues to be felt across the region, highlighting the resilience of those affected and the challenges of recovery.
